About Signapse

Signapse is a fast-growing funded startup that is using AI to build automatic translation from English to British Sign Language. Our technology is grounded in world-leading AI research developed at the University of Surrey with a focus on photo-realistic video generation and neural machine translation. Our AI translation solution is currently shown in transport hubs across the UK and USA, with a wider-domain translation product soon to be released.

To build automatic BSL translation, Signapse needs to annotate a large amount of BSL data that will be used to teach an AI system the linguistics and grammar of BSL. Signapse is growing its data collection team, and is now recruiting for a BSL Data Annotator. This role will focus on annotating our BSL translations with gloss, a written form of sign language. Using our purpose-built internal system for data annotation, you will get a unique chance to be involved in a truly transformative technology for the Deaf community.

This role is at the heart of Signapse mission, working closely with the AI research team and BSL translation team to annotate the most useful data. This position is for a 3-month temporary contract, with a realistic data annotation target. We offer a remote working environment, and opportunity to sculpt an early-stage business building tech for good.

Job Requirements

  • A fluent or native British Sign Language user.
  • Strong understanding of BSL linguistics and grammar. Any previous linguistic or BSL tutoring experience would be valued.
  • Knowledge and understanding of Deaf culture and Sign Language. You will be a part of the Deaf Community (or an ally) and understand the importance of sign language in the Community.
  • Keen to learn and follow processes. For example, we have a data annotation process and we need everyone, staff and freelancers to be following this.
  • Able to grasp the system quickly before annotating

Personal Requirements

  • Previous BSL data annotation experience, particularly with gloss
  • Desire to build ground-breaking AI systems that benefit the Deaf Community
  • An interest in sign language and AI technology

  • Be able to focus and work at speed when fully trained
