Innovative Sign Language Solutions - Signapse Enhances Network Rail's Digital Deaf Accessibility

Jun 25, 2024

Network Rail operates tirelessly to provide a reliable and safe experience for the millions of passengers who use Britain’s railway daily. As one of the UK’s largest employers, with around 42,000 employees, Network Rail is deeply committed to fostering an inclusive environment. This dedication extends to making information accessible in British Sign Language (BSL), ensuring that all colleagues can thrive and that services are more inclusive and accessible for all.

The Problem

In early 2024, Network Rail launched its PACE framework on a digital platform. PACE, which stands for Project Acceleration in a Controlled Environment, is a world-class project delivery playbook for the UK rail industry. This framework integrates knowledge, experience, and standards to help teams deliver projects successfully. However, the PACE Digital modules were not available in BSL, presenting a significant accessibility gap for deaf and hard-of-hearing colleagues.

The Selection

To address this gap, Network Rail engaged Signapse to support the delivery of a BSL accessible version of PACE Digital. With 68 video modules requiring translation, Signapse was chosen for its scalable, technology-led approach, capable of producing a full suite of high-quality BSL videos within the necessary timeframe.

The Implementation

Signapse undertook the task of creating and integrating BSL translations for each of the 68 PACE Digital modules. Leveraging the expertise of their Deaf BSL translators, Signapse ensured that the translations were of the highest quality, particularly given the sector-specific language used throughout the framework. The result was a comprehensive suite of fully-edited, BSL accessible video modules that Network Rail could instantly share with their Programme Management staff.

Real customer experiences

“We’re proud to have worked with Leia Clancy and Signapse to update our video content to include British Sign Language interpretations, ensuring that our deaf and hard-of-hearing colleagues and stakeholders can fully access and benefit from our resources. This update is more than just a technological enhancement; it's a reaffirmation of our commitment to diversity and inclusion. By making PACE Digital more accessible, we're not only following best practices but also leading by example in the industry. We're breaking down barriers and ensuring that our tools are truly built for everyone.”
